A common look for both above and semi in-ground pools is to add decking. This is a more affordable way to get that in-ground look many people try and go for. This can be a very nice addition to any pool there are just a few things to keep in mind when decking up to your pool.
One thing is to make sure you always have access to all skimmers and returns (jets). Both have gaskets inside and outside of the pool to help create a water tight seal. Over time these gaskets, and sometimes the slimmer and return themselves have to be replaced. In order to do this you have to be able to reach both. Whether it is by going under the deck or creating a removable cut out in the deck giving you access.
You also have to keep in mind that you will be putting a pool cover on in the winter. Now if you are decked entirely around the pool you can get a Loop-Loc cover with anchors. In this case you would not have to worry about leaving a gap between the deck and the pool. However, if you have a tarp-like cover with a cable and a winch, it is necessary to keep a small gap, in most cases even 1/4 inch will work, in order to shimmy cover entirely over the top rail. This is by far the most secure way to close a pool, so it is recommended to have the conversation with your deck guy before he starts the job.
Another common misconception with decking is if you have a pool that is decked up to it and you decide to replace the pool. If you take down your old pool and purchase a new one the measurements will always be different; even if you purchase the same size. Pools now are measured slightly bigger, changing the arch on the round sounds. So if you have a deck on a round side and you buy the same size pool, you will still have deck modifications you will have to make in order to match the pool.
These are just some things to keep in mind if you have or are deciding on decking around your pool. If you have any other questions or concerns you can always contact Sparkle Pool Service at 631-981-0685.
